HIS DAY OUT Long Daybill Movie poster c1918 Charlie Chaplin Billy West

Original Australian hand litho long daybill approximately 15" x 40" , folded as issued, very good – fine condition (see enlarged photo).

"Long" daybills were produced in Australia until 1941 when they were replaced by the more familiar smaller format.

NOTE: I have listed this long daybill as His Day Out 1918. There is no record of a Charlie Chaplin film of this title but movies for the international release were often retitled so it could well be for a film that was renamed for the Australian release. One possibility is that it could be for By the Sea (1915) which was also known as Charlies Day Out.

Another theory is that it could have been used for the Billy West film His Day Out in 1918 as a sort of tongue in cheek send up. Billy West was a Charlie Chaplin impersonator. If this is indeed the case it would have been a clever promotion but Charlie Chaplin was not averse to litigation so not sure if he would have condoned the use of his name and image to promote an imposters film. Note the words Charlie Chaplin in his farcical new comedy.

I feel that the poster is most likely from the Billy West film in 1918 but I will leave you to decide. It is certainly a pre 1920s long daybill printed by Renwick Pride.
