There have been many Sherlock Holmes films made over the years and Conan Doyle's master detective continues to be as popular as ever. An eclectic range of actors have portrayed Sherlock Holmes from Eille Norwood to Ian McKellan. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce starred as Holmes and Watson in a series of 14 films between 1939 and 1946. These were generally low budget and very losely adapted from Conan Doyle's novels with a touch of pro Allies wartime propoganda thrown in. The series was extremely popular and many consider Rathbone to be the best Sherlock Holmes.
