Movietone News Australia

20th Century Fox Movietone News was an important part of Australian cinema from the 1930s - the 1960s. The newsreels provided a snapshot of the major stories of the day, both international and local, and were screened before the main feature movie. Jack Davey often provided the fast paced narration.

Stock posters were used with the stories added for each newsreel. Sadly, only a very small number of Movietone News movie posters have survived. From the 1930s to the mid-late 1950s, the Fox posters featured the trademark kookaburras and some of the posters were designed by Oz Bates. From the late 50s to early 60s the posters featured a collage of the type of stories likely to be seen in the newsreels, including sport, important ceremonial events, politics and general news.

The advent of television in Australia led to the redundancy of Movietone News as watching  televised news stories became a part of life for Australian families.
