Movie Poster discoveries

In the last six months, I have come across some incredible collections of movie posters and ephemera. One important collection included heralds from some early 1920s Australian films. In many cases, posters for these films have never been seen before and these heralds help to provide an important historical record of Australian cinema. You will find some of them listed in my Australian Movie Poster category

I also turned up a collection of heralds, flyers and posters for Paget’s Talkies, a travelling movie show that brought the cinema to country towns in Australia in the 1920s and 1930s. Included with this collection were some amazing and rarely seen Surfing posters and heralds from the 60s and 70s.

Another important collection turned up recently. A collector had spent his life amassing everything he could find on Johnny Weissmuller and Tarzan films. Lobby Cards from the early silent Tarzan films, including the Herman Brix serials to the Jungle Jim series of the 1950s were included. I am gradually listing them on my website and also on eBay

I think it is fair to say that this is the largest collection of Johnny Weissmuller memorabilia that has been seen in one place.

Another small collection of movie posters was found under carpet in an old house in Queensland including some very rare 1920s long daybills. Some wonderful collections have turned up in old houses in recent times where movie posters have been used as insulation between linoleum and floorboards. Who knows what other treasures might be lurking out there.

Finally, an ex projectionist decided to sell his collection recently. He had a kept a few boxes of lobby cards and films in his attic from the 30s and 40s that included some great titles and I will be adding these to my website and to my eBay store soon.

New Movie Poster Information Website

I recently launched www.OzeFilm.com a new site that provides information on Australian Movie Posters and Australian films in an easy to read format. The site consolidates research material on www.moviemem.com and also includes new information on the origins of Australian movie posters and will be updated regularly.

……and much more. You can subscribe to updates at www.OzeFilm.com

Linen Backing – A word of caution

I occasionally provide appraisals for insurance purposes and claims. There have been times when collectors have found that linen backed posters have been affected by mould or moisture damage. Linen backing is a great way of displaying posters but posters that have been backed should be stored in a cool dry place away from moisture or sunlight. If a poster is stored or framed in an area that is very humid it can be affected by mould like anything else. Care should also be taken with framing so that the poster does not touch the glass or perspex.

Thats it for this month.

John
